Hot Weather's Effect on Concentrates During Shipping

 

Shatter

Shatter is usually a relatively stable, glass-like concentrate at cooler temperatures. When it gets hot:

  • It can soften and bend.
  • It may become sticky and taffy-like.
  • It can eventually turn into a thick oil.
  • If repeatedly warmed and cooled, it may "sugar up" or nucleate, developing crystals or a grainier texture.

Potency: If it merely softened because it was hot for a few days, most of the THC may still be there. The bigger concern is degradation from prolonged heat and exposure to oxygen and light.

Crumble

Crumble has its dry, porous texture because of its particular composition and processing. Heat can cause it to:

  • Lose its dry, crumbly structure.
  • Soften and collapse.
  • Become waxy or oily.
  • Stick together into one solid mass.

Again, a change from "crumble" into a softer concentrate doesn't necessarily mean a major loss of THC. You've mainly changed its physical form.

Live rosin

Live rosin is generally more sensitive because it contains a high level of terpenes, which contribute to its aroma, flavor, and texture.

When warm, live rosin can:

  • Become much softer or runnier.
  • "Grease up."
  • Change from a badder-like consistency into a more liquid, oily consistency.
  • Separate somewhat, depending on its composition.
  • Lose some of its strong aroma as volatile terpenes evaporate.

With live rosin, terpene loss may be noticeable before major THC loss. So you might open a jar that was left in a hot car or hot room and find that it still has substantial potency but smells less intense and tastes less flavorful.

What actually happens to the THC?

THC doesn't instantly disappear just because a concentrate melts.

For example, imagine two identical jars of live rosin. One stays refrigerated, while the other gets hot enough to become runny for several days. The warm jar may look completely different, but melting itself isn't what destroys the THC.

The things that contribute to degradation are primarily:

  1. Temperature
  2. Length of exposure
  3. Oxygen
  4. Light, especially UV exposure

Over time, THC can gradually degrade and oxidize, including conversion toward CBN. CBN is generally associated with more sedating effects, although the chemistry and subjective effects of aged cannabis products can be more complicated than simply saying "THC turns into CBN."

A few days of heat versus months of heat

If a concentrate was accidentally left somewhere hot for a few days, the likely result depends greatly on how hot it actually got.

Warm room, perhaps 80–90°F:
You may see significant softening and texture changes, particularly with rosin, while potency loss may be relatively limited.

Very hot environment, such as a car that reaches well over 100°F:
More terpene loss and degradation are possible. The concentrate may become very runny or completely lose its original texture.

Repeated or prolonged exposure for weeks or months:
This is when you would expect progressively greater degradation, loss of aroma and flavor, darkening, and potentially more meaningful changes in cannabinoid content.

The important point

A concentrate changing form does not necessarily mean it has lost much potency.

A piece of shatter that turns into sticky oil still contains much of the same material—it is simply no longer in its original glass-like physical state. Similarly, crumble that melts into a waxy blob may still be quite potent. The texture can change dramatically while the THC content changes relatively little.

For live rosin, however, I'd be particularly concerned about terpenes. It may still test or feel quite potent but have noticeably less aroma, flavor, and possibly a somewhat different overall effect.

Best storage

For preserving concentrates:

  • Keep them cool and out of direct light.
  • Keep the container tightly sealed to reduce oxygen exposure and terpene loss.
  • For longer-term storage, refrigeration is commonly used, especially for live rosin.
  • Avoid repeatedly warming and cooling the product if possible.
  • Before opening a refrigerated container, allowing it to warm toward room temperature while sealed can help reduce moisture condensation.

Bottom line: If your shatter, crumble, or rosin was left in a hot place for a few days and melted or softened, I would not assume it has lost a significant amount of potency solely because its consistency changed. The more likely immediate damage—especially with live rosin—is loss of volatile terpenes, aroma, and flavor. The hotter it got and the longer it stayed hot, particularly with exposure to air and light, the greater the likelihood of actual cannabinoid degradation.
